The Ontario Line, Toronto’s newest subway project, is about to take a big step forward — literally. The first two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) have officially arrived in Canada, and Metrolinx is inviting the public to help name them.
These machines will carve out the tunnels for the southern portion of the Ontario Line, stretching from just east of Exhibition Station to just west of the Don River.
Before they begin their underground journey beneath the heart of downtown Toronto, they need names.
Metrolinx has launched a public contest to name the two TBMs, giving Torontonians a unique chance to leave their mark on the city’s transit history.
The naming contest is open until 23 June, and submissions are encouraged to reflect Toronto’s rich local culture, history, and geography.
Once the submission window closes, a shortlist of name suggestions will be released, and the public will have the chance to vote for their favourites.
Winners will receive public recognition and an invitation to a special photo opportunity at the tunnel launch shaft — a once-in-a-lifetime chance to get up close with the machines shaping the future of transit in the city.
