Webuild has started major works on the Ragusa–Catania motorway in Sicily, Italy, including the construction of the Vallone delle Coste Viaduct.
The viaduct is one of the most significant reinforced concrete structures on the route.
The project is part of a broader effort to modernise Sicily’s transport infrastructure, alongside seven high-capacity railway projects across the island.
Central to the railway upgrades is the use of 19 tunnel boring machines (TBMs), with two now being assembled: ‘Atena’ for the Sicani tunnels and ‘Demetra’ for a second bore.
At the Trinacria tunnel site, parts of a third TBM have arrived at the port of Augusta, ready to begin excavation on the Palermo–Catania line.
These works are part of the European Union’s TEN-T corridor, which aims to reduce travel times significantly by connecting Palermo and Catania in just two hours.
Alongside engineering, Webuild’s investment includes local job creation, training and TBM segment factories in Belpasso and Dittaino, reinforcing the long-term value of these infrastructure projects.
