Crews in the City of Ottawa, Kansas are hard at work, using directional boring to install a new waterline along its Main Street.
In a major step in replacing its aging infrastructure, the new pipe will be pulled underground using a directional bore, minimising surface disruption by avoiding open excavation.
Once complete, the upgraded line will improve water reliability and service in the Kansas area.
The upgrades are promising smoother roads, fewer detours, and a better water service overall.
Directional boring, also known as horizontal directional drilling (HDD), is a trenchless method for installing underground utilities like pipes, conduits, or cables.
It uses a surface-launched drilling rig to create a path underground along a pre-determined route.
This technique is particularly useful for navigating obstacles or sensitive areas where traditional trenching is impractical or undesirable.
