WeBuild has released footage of its new tunnel boring machine (TBM) ‘Atena’, set to join the works of the Palermo-Catania high-capacity railway line project.
Now ready to be put to use, it will soon begin excavations on the Enna-Dittaino Lot.
The Palermo-Catania high-capacity railway line project aims to upgrade and double the existing 178km railway line between Fiumetorto and Bicocca, increasing speed and capacity, and reducing travel time between the two cities to about two hours from the current three hours.
The Webuild project also envisages the doubling of a 38km section on the Bicocca-Catenanuova railway line on the Palermo-Catania railway line.
The works are carried out almost entirely on the surface, with the construction of viaducts up to 500m long that cross the waterways: the Simeto and the Buttaceto. These are complex and large-scale works, with earth movements for 1.45 million cubic metres, and many small crossing works.
