A major milestone has been reached in the West Kowloon and Tsuen Wan Sewerage Upgrade project.
The installation of a 220m long, 1200mm diameter sewer pipe using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) has been successfully completed across Un Chau Street, Tai Po Road, and Castle Peak Road.
This work, part of DSD Contract No. DC/2019/11, was designed to improve the sewerage system to support future development in the Sham Shui Po and Pak Tin areas.
Danny Chan, Assistant Resident Engineer at AtkinsRealis, expressed his excitement for the progression made thus far.
“The trenchless technique has allowed us to carry out the work quickly, with minimal disruption to traffic and residents. It’s an environmentally friendly, cost-effective solution that helps reduce the impact of construction on the community,” he said.
By using the TBM, the team was able to install the sewer pipe underground while keeping traffic moving above.
“This approach was made possible by detailed planning, public consultations, and the use of innovative techniques. It’s a great example of how modern construction methods can reduce the impact on the local area,” Chan added.
The completed sewer upgrade will enhance the serviceability of the sewerage system, ensuring it meets the demands of the growing community.
The project is part of a broader effort to improve infrastructure in the West Kowloon and Tsuen Wan areas.
“This success is a result of the team’s hard work and collaboration, and we’re excited to see the positive effects of this work in the community,” Chan said.
The project sets a new standard for efficient and environmentally conscious urban development.
