Connecting trenchless across the world: ISTT’s strategic vision for 2026–2030

The International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT) is pleased to present for the start of 2026, the organisation’s new Five Year Strategic Plan (2026 to 2030.)

The Plan captures a powerful message — “Connecting trenchless across the world.”

It symbolises the Society’s enduring mission to unite global expertise, innovation, and collaboration in advancing trenchless technology. As the world faces mounting infrastructure demands and environmental challenges, ISTT’s 5-Year Strategic Plan (2026–2030) sets a bold course for sustainable growth, professional development, and global leadership in the field.

The trenchless technology industry stands at a pivotal moment. With global markets for Horizontal Directional Drilling and Pipe Relining projected to exceed USD 26 billion by 2030, the next five years will define how effectively the industry can meet this demand. ISTT’s plan provides a comprehensive roadmap to strengthen its network, foster innovation, and advocate for trenchless solutions as the preferred method for underground infrastructure worldwide.

The ISTT vision
Leading trenchless technology throughout the world — ISTT is the global connection for trenchless technology.

The ISTT mission
To influence and support industry worldwide to realize the benefits of trenchless technology, and to advocate for trenchless technology as the standard method for underground infrastructure.

Key values
The ISTT will promote the advancement of trenchless technology worldwide by being:

  • Ethical
  • Innovative
  • Visionary
  • Impartial
  • Inclusive

These guiding principles underpin ISTT’s commitment to excellence, transparency, and collaboration. They ensure that every initiative—from training programs to international conferences—reflects the Society’s dedication to advancing the science and practice of trenchless technology for the public benefit.

Key focus areas

The Strategic Plan identifies five key focus areas that will shape ISTT’s actions and priorities through to 2030. Each area reinforces the Society’s mission to connect, educate, and empower its global community while ensuring long-term sustainability and relevance.  The five Key Focus Areas are:

  1. Our members
Strengthening engagement, communication, and value for Affiliate Societies and individual members through enhanced branding, digital presence, and global events.
  2. Promotion
Expanding awareness of trenchless technology’s benefits through advocacy, media, and partnerships that position ISTT as the authoritative voice of the industry.
  3. Training & education
Building capacity through a dedicated training business unit, global webinars, and collaborations with universities to develop the next generation of trenchless professionals.
  4. Industry best practice
Promoting excellence through awards, standards, and resources that highlight innovation and ensure consistent quality across the global trenchless community.
  5. A sustainable society
Ensuring strong governance, financial transparency, and strategic partnerships to maintain ISTT’s stability and growth for decades to come.

Through this comprehensive plan, ISTT reaffirms its role as the global leader in trenchless technology—connecting people, ideas, and innovations that shape the future of sustainable infrastructure. The ISTT will now take the next steps in conjunction with its members and stakeholders in formulating detailed Marketing, Financial and Action Plans that will allow the successful actioning of the Plan.
