It is time to register for the ISTT’s upcoming webinar, which will provide key knowledge around pressure pipe liners.

On May 22 from 2pm to 3pm GMT, the webinar led by consultant Olivier Thepot and edpert engineer Thomas le Floc’h will delve into a successful method of designing pressure pipe liners.

The Technical Association for Water and Environment (ASTEE), working group for the rehabilitation of pipelines published in 2014 a calculation method for gravity pipe liners, known as 3R2014.

This method was subsequently improved and republished in MOP 145 by the ASCE in the United States.

Based on this success, the working group decided to develop a dimensioning method for pressure pipe liners, utilising the latest research and experiments conducted primarily in Canada at Queen’s University.

This new method adheres to the principles of limit state calculation, also known as Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD).

The method involves the verification of eight limit states, which represent possible modes of failure.

The webinar will present these limit states, three of which specifically address the longitudinal resistance of the liner.

These include the effects of differential settlement (LS6) and seismic wave impact (LS7), which are not considered in the ASTM F1216 method.

It is important to note that this new method is not based on the AWWA qualitative structural classification outlined in the M28 manual, which presents certain challenges that will be discussed in detail during the webinar, particularly how to translate them into equations.

Dr Olivier Thépot graduated from the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (France) with a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering.

He worked at Eau de Paris (the Paris water public operator) in the engineering department as a scientific expert.

He has over 30 years of experience in the diagnosis of underground pipes and the design of structural rehabilitations.

He has published numerous papers on liner design.

He has been actively involved in elaborating on the French design method for rehabilitating gravity pipes – the ASTEE 3R2014 Recommendations.

He was also a member of the Blue Ribbon panel reviewers of the New ASCE Manual of Practice N°145 for the design of Close-fit Liners for Gravity pipes.

He is a member of the French Scientific and ASTEE where he co-leads the working group on the rehabilitation of sanitation
networks.

Thomas le Floc’h is a French chemical engineer who specializes in the field of water and sanitation management.

He worked for 14 years at the Scientific and Technical Building Center (CSTB), a French public company for which he carries out expert missions in the field of public networks and wastewater processes.

He is specifically in charge of the public network’s rehabilitation services and support at CSTB, including the NF390 certification, a French certification, which manages companies working in the field of rehabilitation.

He co-leads the ASTEE working group in rehabilitation techniques with Olivier. He was previously in charge of the laboratory that specialised in this field.
