Joseph Gallagher Limited has secured a major contract worth approximately £50 million to deliver a critical package of trenchless construction works for United Living on the Liverpool Bay CCS project.
The project forms a vital part of the wider HyNet North West initiative, which is one of the UK’s most significant low-carbon energy infrastructure projects.
HyNet North West is designed to support the UK’s transition to a cleaner energy future. It aims to cut regional carbon emissions by producing low-carbon hydrogen, creating a hydrogen distribution network, storing hydrogen underground, and capturing carbon dioxide from industries for permanent storage in Liverpool Bay. The project is expected to boost inward investment, create jobs, and help the UK meet its net zero targets.
Works from Joseph Gallagher will involve designing and constructing 53 trenchless crossings along a 35km pipeline route. These crossings will allow the pipeline to be installed safely beneath existing infrastructure and environmental features without the need for open excavation. The crossings will pass under roads, railways, rivers, canals, woodland, and oil and gas pipelines, highlighting the technical challenges involved.
The project will use a variety of advanced trenchless techniques, including the construction of 24 shafts, two 1200mm tunnel boring machine drives over 100m in length, and twelve 1500mm drives up to 260m long.
Additional elements include horizontal directional drilling (HDD) beneath the River Dee, auger crossings, and dozens of other large-diameter pipeline installations.
The work is expected to create around 160 jobs within Joseph Gallagher’s scope, contributing to the 300 roles anticipated across the wider project supply chain.
