Bohrtec’s BM 600 LS machine is proving that guidance systems aren’t always necessary for precision.
In a recent project in Uganda, trenchless technology specialist Bohrtec supported a series of unguided steel pipe jacking operations for short road crossings.
Contractor Sogea Satom, a subsidiary of VINCI Construction, is carrying out the work as part of a water pipeline installation program.
The team used the new BM 600 LS to drill through clay soil without a guidance system, a setup that Bohrtec machines are designed to handle under the right conditions.
Crews received on-site training during the first installations, which involved steel pipes of 711mm and 1016mm in diameter.
Despite the lack of a guidance system, the drillings were completed quickly and with minimal deviation, highlighting the machine’s capabilities and the operator team’s adaptability.
Encouraged by the outcome, the contractor plans to complete around 80 additional road crossings in the near future, using the same BM 600 LS and varying pipe sizes.
