Amiblu Netherlands, in collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat, Arcadis and Heijmans, has successfully completed a renovation of a concrete culvert with dimensions of 5700mm x 2950mm under the A35 motorway. The challenge was to renew the culvert profile without inconvenience to traffic and to ensure the necessary water drainage in the future.
The old concrete culvert was also provided with a stamping in the middle, so that it was not possible to use one large profile.
Together with engineering firm Arcadis, it was decided, after careful consideration, to install two parallel GRP pipes with diameter DN2160 in the existing box profile by means of the sliplining.
Sliplining is a renovation method in which a new pipe is installed in the old profile. The hollow space between the old and new profile is filled with dämmer, creating an even pressure distribution.
The new pipes take over the entire required load. The two parallel pipes with a diameter of DN2100/ Duitw 2160mm have sufficient hydraulic capacity to ensure water drainage in the future.
Contractor Heijmans installed the GRP pipes professionally and at a rapid pace. A total of 207m of pipes DN2160 PN1 SN10,000 N/m2 with recessed GRP sleeve of 3m were delivered. The installation took place by means of a sliding profile and a winch, where the connections were made with a socket-spigot connection.
In a statement, Amiblu said the collaborative effort was a strong showing of innovation and the company looks forward to growing sustainably.
The project has been very successful and the culvert can now function again for generations,”the statement said.
“We are proud of the result and look forward to future projects that continue to improve the quality and safety of our roads.”
